As I was leafing through the newspaper a few days back, I stumbled upon an interesting article about losing one's heart to fictional characters. An article I, and the many women I know can relate to. Though I wonder... do guys ever fall n love/have crushes, at any rate, on, characters in books or movies? A large percentage of my guy friends have yet to confess to such feelings.
Ever since I'd drown myself in books I'd splurged on, late of last year, two fictional characters still linger in the recesses of my head - Edward Cullen and Jacob Black, both from the Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer.
Edward, like all vampires in the Twilight series, possesses superhuman strength, speed, endurance and agility. His scent and voice are enormously seductive to Bella, so much so that he occasionally sends her into a pliant daze entirely by accident. In addition to the traits he shares with his fellow vampires, Edward has certain abilities that are his alone. He is the fastest of the Cullens, able to outrun any of them. Perhaps as a result of a talent for empathy in his human life, Edward can also read the mind of anyone within a few miles of himself; Bella is the sole exception to this rule. He is, too, musically talented. But that's the thing, though he may be perfect from what's been mentioned above, I truly admire the way he's so protective of Bella - always there when he smells danger. Though thrown into chaos, time and time again, he still does everything in his power to keep Bella from harm.
As for Jacob, a russet skinned, black haired and dark eyed werewolf, he serves as the loyal friend whom has known Bella since they were little. Bella's only considerable shoulder to cry on in New Moon, when Edwards leaves, unexplained. Like Edward, he too is always there for Bella, and would do everything to protect her from harm and hurt - despite the fact he has feelings for her. Jacob, whom Bella describes as a "happy person" who extends his happiness to the people around him. He's cheery, passionate, adventurous, but hot-headed. Either way, though his sensitive side may be overlooked due to his handsomeness, i believe, he would no more be known as the underdog.
Then there's Henry, from The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Henry, a time traveler (obviously!), begins time traveling at the age of five, jumping forward and backward relative to his own timeline. He is unable to control his travels: when he leaves, where he goes, or how long his trip will last. His destinations are tied to his subconscious—he most often travels to places and times related to his own history. During one of his travels, he met Clare - a little 4 year old girl, whom has, during the course of time, known him for most of her life. In the future, they become close and got married. Their relationship was becoming strained from then on - as he can't always be with Clare anytime he wants. Henry, being understanding towards what Clare is going through, tries to spend as much time as he can with her - in case anything comes between them.
Lastly, Mac from the love of her life by Harriet Evans. Mac, whom had a strong interest in Kate by the second she turned around to see who was whispering in her ear, behind her. He, a man, with both charm, and intelligence, swooned her. Their relationship began as an "on-again, off-again" kinda thing before he realized his feelings for her were becoming even more harder to resist. Ever since, their timing has been crappy - daily events, meeting and such kept getting in their way. But when he realized that she was more important to him than the rest, it was too late. Still, though he has traveled many places and seen many faces, he knows for sure, he is meant to be with Kate. And they do, at the end.
If we dated, I'd probably give him a piece of my mind. Thankfully, that seems unlikely to happen. I'd just stick to guys in reality for these fictional characters may only seem appealing in ink. It's a good thing their just crushes. That's the beauty of fictional characters: they will never reveal annoying habits and you ever feel the least bit impatient with them, you just have to turn the page or put them back on the shelf.
